Our borough

Southwark represents a place of huge excitement and opportunity with a vibrant spirit pushing to achieve more for residents. It is a place of growth, development and opportunity.
A borough with a rich and proud history, strong sense of community and a great ability to transform and renew, sometimes very much against the odds.

Southwark possibly more than most typifies the changes, challenges and opportunities of being part of London as a global premier city and international destination of choice for business, enterprise, entertainment and the arts.

Our borough is home to the architectural gem The Shard, to world-famous attractions such as the Tate Modern, Borough Market, Dulwich Picture Gallery and Tower Bridge. 7% of residents work in the cultural sector, complementing famous names including Hilton hotels and Ernst & Young who are based in the area.

There is an incredible range of employment opportunities.

Our future

Regeneration and development abound with some of Europe’s most exciting and complex schemes happening in the borough.

Projects such as the 3 billion redevelopment of Elephant and Castle delivering new homes, parks, leisure facilities and transport links, the future regeneration of the Old Kent Road, Aylesbury, Canada Water and London Bridge Quarter, are being delivered in the borough bringing thousands of new homes and jobs.

The extension of the Bakerloo line is planned to come right through the borough improving transport links and high quality public spaces, building a sustainable future and again creating more jobs for local residents.

As the largest Housing landlord in London, we’re committed to making a real difference to the quality of life for local people, making the home environment cleaner, safer and more modern.
We are developing cycle routes and ‘Healthy Streets’ that will enhance the health and well being of those who use them, plus a safer network of roads and a better commuting experience.

We are a borough that brims confidence and ambition and this is evident in its residents and communities at large.

We're immensely proud of the work we've done so far and our mission to drive social change - creating a borough where the lives and well being of all our residents are improved now and into the future.

Our values

The Council’s vision to deliver a fairer future for all is underpinned by strongly identified, plain speaking principles that guides all it does. These values of treating residents as if they were a valued member of the family and spending money as if it were from our own pocket are the cornerstone of our work. We are committed to being open, honest and accountable.
